No other president would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have conceived – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous the richest Americans, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

As bewildering as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it completely novel. We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be.
